It’s so easy to get caught up in our thoughts and emotions. I woke up late, the train was late, I forgot something, it’s raining outside, I don’t feel well, I’m worried about this or that…..there is an endless string of things the mind clings to and brings up.

How can it be that the mind is constantly running this way and that? Some days it has a will of its own and runs wild – turning the day from positive to negative. Other days, things are running smoothly and we feel in control and able to achieve what we set out to do.

What makes the difference and how can we change this monkey of our mind? One way is to become aware of the thought process and to not be controlled by it. Easier said than done, but with practice, it can happen! Over time and with the practice of non-judgemental observation, you may find that you can notice and pay attention to the train of thought without jumping on board completely.

Another way to turn around a negative spiral of thought is to stop and seek joy. Despite the rain, the late train or the worry, actively look for things around you that bring appreciation and joy. It may be pouring down, but you are dry in your rain coat and remembered to bring the umbrella. The train may be late, but you had a moment to notice a child sleeping in their carriage on the station platform. The worry may be there but you realize it is only because of how much you care.

By taking a brief pause on your train of thought during the day and seeking the most joy possible in that moment, you can begin to change not only your neural pathways, but also your overall wellbeing. Watch your thoughts and look for the unexpectedly positive angle of seemingly impossible moments! You’ll be surprised how fast you can find the gift of joy right in front of you!
